North Korea Vs The USA: What Options Are On The Table?

Posted by: News Desk - Washington DC
Posted on: Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 - 7:22 am

The nuclear stand-off between President Donald Trump of the USA and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un is finally reaching an epic proportion with North Korea firing a long-range missile over Japan recently. North Korea has constantly threatened death and destruction to the USA, and President Trump had recently followed in the same order, issuing his own threat of great fire and fury if North Korea continued to threaten the USA.

However, North Korea has not stopped threatening the USA. On the contrary, North Korea is escalating the threat and disrespect to the USA and the international community, as if to be the biggest bully over President Trump, whom they perceive as a toothless bulldog who can only bark and inflict no pain at all. The sanctions have not been a pain enough for North Korea; International isolation is no pain at all, and threatening them with anything else at this moment only seems to embolden the young North Korean leader even more. So what are all these options that President Trump is now saying are on the table to deal with Kim Jong-un?

The first clear and unmistakable option would have been to shoot down these North Korean missiles in mid flight to prove to the chubby punk-haired North Korean leader that there is this capability that will limit the effectiveness of any nuclear missile he attempts to send to the USA, Japan, or South Korea in case of a real war breaking out. But the US military has not exercised that option in the face of the several missile tests that North Korea has launched up till today. Why is that?

The reason is that the USA itself is not very confident of the effectiveness of it’s own missile defense weapons. As such, trying to intercept a North Korean missile and failing, will expose this secret to the world, adding more salt to the injury and shame North Korea has been piling on the heads of US presidents from Bill Clinton to George Bush, Obama, and Donald Trump now; But more especially, blowing the ego of Donald Trump who has been boasting that he would do more than his predecessors, to tackle the problem North Korea has been posing to the USA for many years. What is another option?

Well, that one option of pleading with China to deal with North Korea for the USA has failed. It was a cowardly option for President Trump anyway, because, what has China got to do with the whole mess? So Trump could now try to do the one simple thing to be tough, by invading North Korea as Bush did in Iraq, and as Obama and NATO did in Libya.

Now, this is the “fire and fury” option. The danger here, is that at the first inkling of the threat of a North Korean invasion, be it real or perceived, the North Korean nuclear war machine has been programmed to fire off a few nuclear missiles at several directions to inflict destruction on the mainland of the USA, Japan and South Korea. This is exactly the reason North Korea has been developing this nuclear technology, because they do not want to fall like they have seen Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gadhafi fall in Iraq and Libya. There are no more options left. Except of course the options that Donald Trump has used to criticize Clinton and Obama as being weak and ineffective. And that option is to keep applying ineffective sanctions against North Korea, negotiating with them, and deceiving themselves and the world that the USA will never allow North Korea to have nuclear weapons even though the Korean state has already acquired enough of the nuclear weapons it needs, so many years ago.

And it is no longer a secret that North Korea does not want any more negotiations with the USA or the international community. As a matter of fact, if any negotiations were to take place, it would strictly be on North Korea’s terms, and not the other way around. So that only leaves one logical and painful option that is on North Korea’s table: Leave the renegade state alone to determine her own future, and rub shoulders with other great nuclear countries like Russia, France, UK, Germany, Pakistan, India, China and the USA. What is wrong with that?

It underscores the pride and position that the USA has been taking for several years, that they will never allow North Korea to be a nuclear nation. They are always lying to themselves into believing that North Korea is not already a nuclear state. All the scientists who argue in that favor always find a way to say that North Korea is one year, two years or several years away from acquiring a nuclear weapon capability. Or they will say that even if they had it, they did not have a way to deliver it successfully.

But now, the world is catching up to this lie, and it is a big blow to the prestige and ego of the USA. Because certainly, if North Korea did not already have this capability, the US military would have invaded the poor country a long time ago like Iraq and Libya, or other weak states that have fallen because of their lack of a deterrence factor when facing bigger powers like the USA, France or the UK.

It might well be that North Korea is bluffing about its capabilities, as well as the USA is overestimating her own powers. But the world might never know this because both countries are afraid of the casualties that will fall on both sides if either of them provokes a war. In the meantime, North Korea will continue to bluff and defy the USA and the international community, and President Donald Trump will continue to huff and puff, but will never blow anything away. Or not?

Well, according to what President Donald Trump now says, “We’ll see… We’ll see...” Seen?
